We, the middle class people, are the silent backbone of this world, enduring hardships with grace to keep society thriving. Our sacrifices often go unnoticed, but they are the bedrock upon which the happiness of others is built. We are straightforward individuals who value respect, family, and friendships. Our desire to avoid conflict often leads us to silently endure injustices. Those above us treat us like cogs in their grand machine, while those below us act as if we have robbed them of their opportunities.
I am Vikrom Sharma, and I have written this article not just for myself, but for all of us. I believe our silence is our greatest mistake. It is this very silence that makes us vulnerable, turning us into easy targets – sometimes for the ultra-wealthy who believe they can buy their way through life, and other times for those unscrupulous individuals who prey on others to make a quick buck.
THE SILENT STRUGGLE
The middle class has always been the buffer, absorbing the shocks of economic downturns and societal pressures. We work tirelessly, often juggling multiple responsibilities, yet our efforts are rarely recognised. The narrative that the middle class is comfortable is a myth. We stretch every rupee, making sacrifices to ensure our families have a better future but this constant stretching has its limits, and we are nearing the breaking point.
THE BURDEN WE BEAR
From skyrocketing education costs to exorbitant healthcare expenses, the middle class is constantly squeezed. Our dreams of owning a home, providing the best education for our children, and securing a comfortable retirement seem to drift further away. We pay our taxes, follow the rules, and contribute to society, yet we are treated as invisible entities.
THE EXPLOITATION WE FACE
The wealthy often see us as mere tools to increase their wealth, offering us the bare minimum while reaping maximum profits. Our work, dedication, and skills are undervalued, and our voices are unheard. On the other end, those with less sometimes resent us, believing we have everything they lack. This misperception creates a divide that only serves to isolate the middle class further.
BREAKING THE SILENCE
Our silence is our greatest enemy. It allows others to define our worth and dictate our lives. It’s time for a revolution – a peaceful, yet powerful movement to assert our rights and demand the respect we deserve. We must unite, share our stories, and support one another. Our voices need to be heard in the corridors of power and influence.
THE WAY FORWARD
1. Community Strength – We must build a strong community that supports each other. By sharing resources, knowledge, and opportunities, we can uplift one another.
2. Advocacy – We need to advocate for policies that protect and benefit the middle class. This includes fair wages, affordable healthcare, and quality education.
3. Financial Literacy – Educating ourselves about finances can help us make better decisions and protect our interests.
4. Collective Bargaining – United, we can negotiate better working conditions and benefits.
The middle class is not a monolithic entity but a diverse group of individuals with unique challenges and aspirations. Our silence has allowed others to take advantage of us, but it’s time to change that. By uniting and raising our voices, we can create a society that respects and values the contributions of the middle class. Let’s break the cycle of silent suffering and pave the way for a future where our efforts are acknowledged, and our dreams are within reach.
